Terre des Hommes Sheds Light on the Plight of Femicide Orphans

Femicide, an appalling crime plaguing Italy, claims the lives of approximately one woman every three days. Yet, amidst these staggering statistics lies an even more heart-wrenching reality: the overlooked plight of the orphans left behind. These children, suddenly bereft of their mothers due to the actions of their fathers—who often end up incarcerated—face a harrowing journey of grief and trauma. Shockingly, despite the gravity of their situation, the Italian government has yet to implement immediate intervention plans to support these vulnerable victims.

In response to this urgent need, a collaborative campaign with Terre des Hommes has emerged, shedding light on the dire circumstances faced by the orphans of femicide and advocating for their support. Central to this initiative is the Respiro project, a beacon of hope created to assist these children and their families during their darkest hours.

The campaign employs a poignant approach, leveraging creativity to convey the stark reality of femicide’s aftermath. One potent media piece depicts a seemingly innocent scene of a child joyfully drawing with chalk. Yet, as the narrative unfolds, the audience is confronted with the chilling truth as the same child’s playground transforms into the crime scene of a femicide. This juxtaposition serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of femicide on innocent lives.

Published in Italy in May 2024, this professional campaign, spearheaded by Terre des Hommes in collaboration with ad agencies Acne and Deloitte Digital, encompasses a range of media formats, including film, outdoor advertising, and print. Its overarching goal is to raise awareness within the public interest sphere and prompt action to support the orphans of femicide.

As we confront the grim reality of femicide, let us not forget those who often bear the deepest scars: the children left behind. Through advocacy, support, and collective action, we can strive to ensure that no orphan of femicide walks alone on their journey toward healing and justice.
