After 25 years at sea, Wilson is back—and living happily in Fiji

After 25 years of being lost at sea, Wilson, the world’s most iconic volleyball, has finally been found, and his return is being celebrated with a nationwide search in Australia, hosted by Tourism Fiji. Wilson, who captured the hearts of millions in the movie Cast Away alongside Tom Hanks, was last seen drifting into the ocean, leaving fans wondering what happened to the beloved volleyball. Thought to be lost forever, Wilson has made a remarkable return to the place where his story began: the beautiful, sunny shores of Fiji.

This heartwarming comeback marks a new chapter for Wilson, as he embarks on a journey to find happiness in Fiji. To celebrate, Tourism Fiji has organized a special event on Australian beaches, giving early risers at Bondi Beach, St Kilda, and Gold Coast Main Beach the opportunity to find one of three Wilson volleyballs, hidden on the sand from 6:00 am onwards. But it’s not just any beach find—each Wilson volleyball features a QR code that unlocks the chance to win a dream trip to Fiji, where happiness truly comes naturally.

For those unable to join the beach hunt, there’s still a chance to participate. Starting July 24, anyone who spends $250 or more at Wilson’s Sporting Goods, either online or in-store, will automatically be entered to win a Fijian getaway. This provides another opportunity to experience the paradise that Wilson has found and to immerse in the charm and beauty of Fiji.

Tourism Fiji’s CEO Brent Hill summed up the celebration perfectly, saying, “Wilson’s story has touched millions, and now it’s time for his happily ever after. He’s back to playing, making friends, and soaking up Fiji’s sunshine.” This event is not just about the return of an iconic character, but also about showcasing the stunning landscapes, rich culture, and vibrant tourism sector of Fiji, the place that inspired Wilson’s journey.

Fiji continues to be a top destination for travelers, with a significant increase in visitors from New Zealand in recent years. In 2024, 226,928 New Zealanders visited Fiji, marking a 10% rise from pre-COVID times. The country’s tourism is thriving, with travelers returning to enjoy its pristine beaches, welcoming culture, and rich history.

Wilson’s return is a reminder that true happiness is often found in connection, nature, and shared experiences—values that Fiji offers in abundance. Whether discovering Wilson on the beach or experiencing the warmth and beauty of Fiji firsthand, this celebration is an invitation to reconnect with the world and find joy in the simplest moments.
