Paul Kalkbrenner’s New ‘Kabelmann’ Project: A 12-Minute Short Film with Mother Berlin

Paul Kalkbrenner, a renowned electronic music artist, has unveiled a unique project titled “Kabelmann,” which includes a two-track EP and a multi-part short film. This project, created in collaboration with Mother Berlin and Smuggler, was premiered at the Ciclope Festival in Berlin and aims to blend music with visual storytelling.

The short film “Kabelmann” consists of two chapters that accompany the tracks from the EP. The main character, Kabelmann, represents an otherworldly figure connected to endless cables, symbolizing Kalkbrenner’s analog approach to music and live performances. The first part of the film follows Kabelmann on an emotional journey, seeking human connection while being hindered by a mysterious energy flowing through his cables. Throughout this journey, glimpses of Kalkbrenner himself hint at the source of this energy, creating a deep connection between the artist and his character.

The second part of the film takes a different turn, leading viewers into a dreamlike afterlife filled with intense and violent sequences. This part ends with an ambiguous conclusion, leaving Kabelmann’s fate uncertain. The soundtrack for both films is composed of Kalkbrenner’s original tracks, which enhance the emotional depth of the story.

The films were directed by Björn Rühmann and shot on location in Manchester and Berlin, utilizing an analog aesthetic by filming on Kodak 16mm film. This project marks the second collaboration between Kalkbrenner and Mother Berlin, following their previous work on the short film for his track “Schwer.”

Kalkbrenner expressed his excitement about the project, stating that he has always enjoyed exploring how his music can translate into visual forms. The concept of Kabelmann resonated with him, reflecting his experiences as an artist who feels somewhat like an outsider in the contemporary electronic music scene.

Mother Berlin’s creative team played a significant role in bringing this project to life, blending storytelling with captivating visuals. The resulting films showcase the intricate relationship between music and film, allowing viewers to experience the profound themes and emotions embedded in both the visuals and the music.
