Stream2Sea, Reef Relief: McCann Demand’s Eco-Friendly Ocean Solutions

Introducing Reef Relief: A Breakthrough in Sustainable Sunscreen

As we approach the summer holiday season, the team at Stream2Sea, in collaboration with coral scientists from the University of Derby and global ad agency McCann, is thrilled to unveil Reef Relief – a revolutionary environmentally friendly sunscreen that not only protects your skin from harmful UV rays but also nourishes endangered coral reefs.

Coral reefs, often referred to as the “rainforests of the sea,” play a crucial role in marine ecosystems and support an incredible diversity of marine life. However, these vital ecosystems are under threat from climate change, pollution, and other human activities. Shockingly, an estimated 14,000 tons of sunscreen end up in the world’s oceans every year, with many conventional sunscreens containing chemicals that contribute to coral bleaching and reef degradation.

Reef Relief represents a paradigm shift in sun protection. Developed with input from leading marine and cosmetic technicians, as well as renowned coral scientist Professor Michael Sweet, this groundbreaking sunscreen is scientifically formulated to be reef-friendly and skin-safe.

The product underwent rigorous testing at the University of Derby, where it was proven to actively promote healthy coral growth, with some species showing an increase of up to eight percent. This remarkable achievement is attributed to Reef Relief’s bespoke formula, which features an eco-cert-compliant base and excludes harmful chemicals. Instead, it incorporates an innovative blend of FDA-compliant marine nutrients that mimic the natural diet of coral.

Professor Sweet, a UN marine advisor and coordinating author for the United Nations World Ocean Assessment, underscores the critical importance of coral reefs, which support over 25 percent of marine life and provide livelihoods for over one billion people worldwide. He warns that without significant changes, these vital ecosystems could face functional extinction by 2030.

While some sunscreen manufacturers claim to be “reef-safe,” Reef Relief takes it a step further by introducing a new standard of certification: Reef Protection Factor (RPF). This scientifically validated mark aims to provide consumers with transparent information, empowering them to make responsible choices for themselves and the environment.

Jon Elsom, Group Executive Creative Director of McCann Central, expresses excitement about Reef Relief’s potential to make a positive impact. By combining innovative thinking with scientific expertise, this initiative embodies the spirit of responsible innovation.

Stream2Sea and McCann are currently in discussions with global government and tourism bodies to introduce Reef Relief worldwide. Together, we can protect our oceans and enjoy the sun responsibly.
