McDonald’s Hong Kong Celebrates 50th Anniversary with Ronald McDonald Bench Hunt Across the City

McDonald’s Hong Kong is celebrating its 50th anniversary with an exciting year-long campaign to thank the people of Hong Kong for their support over the years. The campaign, created in collaboration with DDB Group Hong Kong and OMD Hong Kong, highlights the role McDonald’s has played in the memories of Hongkongers, bringing together people of all ages to celebrate the brand’s impact on the city.

The celebration kicked off with a special event featuring dancers dressed in classic McDonald’s Hong Kong uniforms from different eras. The event also included appearances from Hong Kong rap duo SoftHard (軟硬) – Jan Lamb and Eric Kot – who starred in many of McDonald’s classic commercials in the ’90s. Joining them were beloved McDonald’s characters like Ronald McDonald, Birdie, Hamburglar, and Grimace, celebrating McDonald’s growth alongside the people of Hong Kong over the past 50 years.

One of the main highlights of the campaign is the 50 Ronald McDonald benches treasure hunt. Starting on January 1, McDonald’s is placing 50 iconic Ronald McDonald benches across key locations in Hong Kong, inviting people to find them and relive the memories of sitting on these benches. The benches will be placed in famous spots such as Harbour City’s Ocean Terminal Deck, The Peak, Repulse Bay, and historic McDonald’s locations like Yee Wo Street in Causeway Bay and others.

Participants can scan QR codes at each bench to collect virtual stamps and unlock fun facts and prizes, including free menu items and digital collectibles. The first 50 people who collect all 50 stamps will win a grand prize of a free Big Mac meal every day for a year.

To make the celebration even more special, McDonald’s also launched a video featuring SoftHard placing benches in iconic Hong Kong locations, inviting everyone to join in the treasure hunt. Eight more videos will be released, showcasing the importance of each location and offering daily special menu items for customers. On January 1, McDonald’s also offered free rides on the Star Ferry between Central and Tsim Sha Tsui, with a special McDonald’s-themed ferry, designed to take passengers on a nostalgic journey to relive the brand’s iconic moments.

Throughout the year, McDonald’s will continue celebrating with other campaigns, including the return of favorite McDonald’s characters on major outdoor media across the city. The treasure hunt and anniversary celebrations will run until February 5, with ongoing activities to mark this significant milestone.

Additionally, McDonald’s Hong Kong introduced McGriddles as part of their all-day breakfast menu, making breakfast favorites available all day, including the popular Jumbo Breakfast and crispy Hash Browns. The McDonald’s App also features a week-long promotion with daily discounts available until January 7.

This 50th anniversary celebration is a reflection of McDonald’s deep connection to Hong Kong, and the brand’s commitment to delivering great customer experiences, digital innovations, and menu improvements over the years. McDonald’s CEO, Randy Lai, and Chief Marketing Officer, Tina Chao, are excited about the celebrations ahead, as they continue to bring joy to the people of Hong Kong.
